When to see the Northern Lights

The Northern Lights are one of the most popular natural attraction in Iceland. However, you can only see them during the winter time and they are quite elusive.

Very many people come to Iceland to see the Northern Lights, to experience seeing the auroras dancing across the night sky. However, choosing the right time to see the lights is paramount, especially since the auroras are quite elusive.

      You need darkness, my friend!

First of all, during summer the nights are bright as day in Iceland. This is due to the northerly position of the island and the tilt of Earth’s axis. In fact, many tourists who are used to dark nights often find it hard to fall asleep in Iceland in that season.

The Auroras can only be seen at nights, since they are invisible in the sunlit sky. Therefore it is better to plan your visit after the fall equinox and before the spring equinox.

      You also need cold!

Ok, now it is getting tricky. The colder it is, the likelier it is that the skies are clear. It is nigh impossible to see the Northern Lights when the sky is overcast. Here in Iceland, if the temperature falls beneath 0°C very often it means that the nights are still and clear.

Therefore, the optimal season to see the auroras around Reykjavik is late September – early December and late January – early March.

Though the chances of seeing the Northern Lights in December and January are good, the weather conditions can be a trouble, especially if you need to leave the city to find the opportune place for spotting the Northern Lights.

We can help you see the Northern Lights!

Many of our driver guides are experienced Aurora hunters and know myriad of places and locations where you can spot the Northern Lights. They are, however, a natural phenomenon and sightings can therefore never be guaranteed. You greatly increase your chances, however, with a local expert driver-guide on a private Northern Lights tour.

Feel free to reach out to us, we are glad to help.

      Delux Iceland

Iceland is a unique place, where you find breathtaking vistas of natural beauty, serene fjords, pristine glaciers and soaring volcanoes. And it is easy to witness it all, while still enjoying style and luxury. Here’s our guide to delux Iceland.

Iceland is one of a kind. The North-Atlantic island is by many considered a must-see due to the remoteness, untouched nature and the fact that it is still one of the few places where you can enjoy breathtaking scenes of incredible natural forces at play and beautiful attraction, without feeling crowded.

Despite its remoteness, Iceland has many luxury hotels, retreats and restaurants, where you can enjoy not only the serene beauty of the island, the Northern Lights or the midnight sun, but also the finer things in life.

      Delux hotels

If luxury and style is what you are aiming for there are many hotels to choose from in Iceland. There are however a few that we recommend.

The Retreat at the Blue Lagoon is an absolute must! This one of a kind hotel is situated by the Blue Lagoon and not only will you experience world class dining, overwhelming service and hospitality, but you will also have your own private Blue Lagoon spa.

If you are staying in Reykjavik we recommend two hotels. The first one is Reykjavik Konsulat Hotel. It is a smallish, friendly hotel in a great location, in an old building that once served as the Swedish consulate. If you are looking for an apartment hotel, we recommend that you choose the Black Pearl. Situated in central Reykjavik, the hotel is within walking distance of many landmarks, museums, shops and restaurants. The Black Pearl offers superb and fully equipped suites.

We are happy to help you make reservations.

      Delux tours

We offer many great private, luxury tours, with local, expert driver guides. All our drivers are all certified, professional drivers who are ready and eager to take you through this beautiful city in one of our vehicles. We are discrete and offer personal service.

There are many great places and attractions in Iceland where you can propose to your partner and we have helped many people find the right spot at the right time. Here’s a short list of 5 superb and unique places where you can pop the big question.

      Hraunfossar waterfalls

Hraunfossar waterfalls are one of kind waterfalls. Aptly named Hraunfossar or Lava waterfalls, the water sprouts forth from beneath the lava, with moss and birch creating a pristine and wonderful backdrop. These falls are spectacular and unique, making them a perfect setting for a romantic proposal.

      The Sun Voyager

This beautiful, gleaming steel sculpture in Reykjavik is one of the most popular landmark in Reykjavik. On still summer evenings the sun colours the sea water and casts wonderful shadows dancing over the bay. The sculpture was essentially envisaged as an ode to the sun, symbolising light and hope. What could be a more fitting setting to a proposal?

      The Diamond Beach

What a fitting name for a place to slip a diamond ring on your future partner’s finger! Not far from the Jokulsarlon Glacial Lagoon, you will find a black sand beach where there are hundreds of beached icebergs. The sea water has washed them, making the look like diamonds in the sand.

      Thingvellir National Park

There are perhaps few places in Iceland that are as popular as Thingvellir National Park. And no wonder, this place is not only a geological wonder, but also a place ripe with history. It also offers many places with a great view, which make the perfect backdrop for the proposal.
